Solitude
If you were the last person on earth and there was no one else to see your artistic work, would you still be making it? This was a question that began to plague my mind even before the real plague changed the world. It has become my personal litmus test for the art that I create, a question that helps me to determine whether or not my work is genuinely motivated by my passion. “Solitude” is the result of the combined desire and necessity to make a short film completely on my own from start to finish and in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis, the narrative and thematic questions of “Solitude” have become globally pertinent.
But while I generated this project on my own, the community feedback that I received from the Storyteller’s Studio was invaluable in my continued artistic growth and development. The opportunity to discuss my solitary work with a community reminded me that even though I can create work in a vacuum if needed, that is not my current reality–and thank goodness for that! Because even though there is fulfillment and internal peace to be found in solitude, being a part of a like minded artistic community is irreplaceable. It is continued conversations and mutual support from a community that make art truly sing; that connection between people that occurs when dissecting a story that feeds the soul. These are the kinds of connections and community that Storytellers Studio fosters and why the experiences I have had as a part of the cohort have been an irreplaceable part of my artistic growth and something I will carry with me for years to come.
