To Be Alive

Content warnings: Discussion of death/mental illness

Excerpt featuring Drew Burt (Blake) and Annie Vee (Lily)

To Be Alive is one of the first pieces I had ever written as a playwright, as a final assignment in Playwriting I. What started off as a small scene, is growing to become a full length play. It was workshopped in 2019 at Ramapo College directed by Ryan Smith.

When I joined the Storyteller Studio as a playwright, I knew I wanted to bring in something that I know has gone through a lot of changes since it’s first draft, after listening to so many other people put their first drafts, or first pieces of work out there. Being a part of Storyteller Studio helped me grow back into being a playwright after theater itself was shut down for such a long time, and I found it difficult to pick up the pen again. After every meeting though, I started too. The cohort here helped me learn how to analyze work again, and gave me such a deeper insight into dramaturgy. I am thankful to have been a part of the Storyteller Studio, and I hope to hear all of my fellow cohort members' work soon!
