Q+A

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

I started getting involved in the arts at age 12 and it was mainly because the arts gave me the opportunity to escape. However, as the years have gone by, I’ve learned that instead of escaping, I want to embrace who I am and let that be the face of my art. I want to embrace my community, my roots, and my identity and that is what I want to define me as an artist.

How have you grown during your time in the Storyteller Studio?

During my time in Storyteller Studio, I have had the privilege to hear a bunch of new works from emerging artists and also meet other artists who are out there doing the work and managing a career in the arts. In all honesty, as someone who recently graduated from college, inspiration is a big need currently and I have been inspired countless times during my time at Storyteller Studio.

What does it mean to you to be an artist in our current moment?

Over this past year, I’ve been connecting with a lot more artists that do everything nowadays. As an artist myself, I want to be curious about the different facets of artistry and not just limit myself to acting or writing. Being an artist right now means to make my own doors and to work with artists that make their own doors as well; together we will flourish.

How has this program shaped your understanding of dramaturgy and collaboration?

Dramaturgy is still a relatively new concept to me as of last year, but I’m beginning to understand that it is all about asking questions which can help the playwright understand their world better. Dramaturgical work is based on collaboration with the playwright, just like collaboration is the foundation for Theatre as a whole.

What's next for you?

I am currently working on finding a next project for myself. It’s been hard balancing stability with my career, but I want to continue doing what I love and getting to meet so many talented individuals along the way.

The 7th Floor Apartment

My project is a one act play called The 7th Floor Apartment, which occurs on a fiery night that Estefania and her father’s apartment catches on fire and they are forced to wait outside until it is safe to go back in. However, when an unexpected friend comes by to help, dark secrets begin to unfold as Estafania is forced to relive a painful moment in her life.

I started writing this project a while back while I was in college since I had been new to playwriting and wanted to explore it more. I worked on it a great deal with my professor and eventually with the help of a playwright named Sibusiso Mamba, I got a chance to develop it further just in time for its premiere with STREAM ON productions. However, after its premiere, I had not revisited the play until recently when I felt like I was having the biggest writing block ever. There were a lot of ideas of stories I wanted to write during my season with Storyteller Studio, but I always ended up coming back to the possibility of doing some rewrites on The 7th Floor Apartment. Therefore, I decided to listen to that gut feeling that told me it was time to open my play back up again. It was a slow process with a lot going on in my life post grad and I had a couple of rewrites here and there but eventually I came to the script presented here. Although I plan to keep on rewriting, the Studio has presented me with a lot of tools to use as inspiration and as motivation to continue with this project as I’ve been able to meet a lot of artists who manage continuing to make art while also trying to make an honest living outside of the arts. It’s been immensely helpful to meet such artists and hear their stories as it helps me become a better artist myself.
